When my parents and I signed up for a day-long bus tour to see two French chateaus, we had done so mostly due to the fact the second chateau, Fontainebleau, is so famous. However, it was the first one we visited that stole our hearts, leaving Fontainebleau in the dust. Vaux le Vicomte, was simply the most elegantly lavish, overwhelmingly stylish place I have ever been. It was typically gilded and glorious but never gaudy or excessive in the way so many places of it's vintage can be. If you ever go to Paris, please do yourself the favour of setting a day trip there up. It was magnificent.

We booked our tour on a whim while in Paris – thank goodness for Dad’s research beforehand or we would never have known of its existence and missed this doozie of a place.

Also, fun fact, Vaux le Vicomte was actually the inspiration for Versailles, and in truth I preferred it.
